Day 15 | THURSDAY, SEPTember 4
Written by Lakepointe Elder
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7
PSALM 19:7-8
“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.”
GRATITUDE & GOD'S WORD: THE CURE FOR ANXIETY
Anxiety is a daily battle for many of us. Whether it’s the pressure of work or school deadlines, financial struggles, medical issues, or neverending to-do lists, stress can build until it overwhelms our minds. It can cause us to make irrational decisions, say or do things we will regret and affect our health.
In a world focused on comparison, self-gratification and accumulation, there are endless opportunities to worry about when we align with those priorities. God invites us into a different daily rhythm—one filled with peace, not panic; with joy, not dread.
Philippians 4:6-7 and Psalm 19:7-8 reveal two spiritual practices that help cure anxiety: thankfulness and time in His Word.
Gratitude may seem like a small thing, but it is a powerful weapon in the fight against anxiety. When we choose to thank God, even in difficulty, we shift our focus from our problems to His promises. Gratitude doesn’t deny our struggles—it simply refuses to let them define us.
Anxiety thrives in the rocky soil of fear, but thankfulness roots us in trust. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness in the past and His promises for the future.
Try starting your day thinking about what you’re thankful for—big or small. Maybe even write it down to reinforce it. A Saturday at home, shade on a hot day (a big one here in Texas), or a cup of coffee in the morning—all of these can be viewed as an infusion of God’s grace in our routine—if we choose thankfulness for these things.
As you practice this consistently, you’ll find your heart and mind trending toward appreciation and thankfulness. Anxiety loses its grip as peace begins to grow.
Now, pair this attitude with the numerous promises we can be thankful for in God’s Word. The Bible is more than a book of stories or teachings. It is living, powerful, deeply personal, and filled with promises like nothing the world can offer.
When we spend time in God’s Word, we are reminded that we are not alone. His promises speak directly to our fear, insecurity and exhaustion.
When we meditate on Scripture, it anchors our minds in truth. Instead of fixating on worst-case scenarios, we remind ourselves of the faithfulness of God. Verses like Matthew 6:34 (“Do not worry about tomorrow …”) help guide our emotions when worry tries to take over.
Make it a habit to begin your day in the Word. Besides special seasons like 21 Days of Prayer, at a minimum, aim for four times per week (a majority of the week). The more, the better. It doesn’t have to be long—start with just one chapter or a few verses. Ask God to speak through it.
Over time, you’ll notice a change. God’s voice will become louder than the voice of stress, and His truth will bring clarity and comfort in the chaos. Eternal perspective and priorities will come into focus and occupy our thoughts. Trivial, temporary, worldly issues won’t be given more status in our minds than they deserve.
PRAY
Heavenly Father, I am in awe of you and your great love. I am humbled and honored that you would choose me to help build your Kingdom. Help me see others through your loving eyes.
Show me how to be more caring and compassionate. Use me as a conduit of your extraordinary grace to those who need it most.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
