Day 11 | Sunday, August 31

Written by Paul Cunningham

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? … But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.

Psalm 13:1, 5-6

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

We don’t often talk about it, but most believers eventually go through seasons when God feels distant. Your prayers feel like they’re bouncing off the ceiling. Worship songs sound hollow. You remember times when you felt close to God, but now it seems like you’re wandering through a spiritual desert. It’s a lonely place, and if you’re there right now, know that you’re not alone—and that you’re not a failure.

David, called a man after God’s own heart, wrote honestly about these times. In Psalm 13, he pours out his frustration and longing: “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”

David doesn’t hide his questions or pain. He brings his raw emotions to God. It’s a vital lesson for all of us: when God feels far away, the best thing we can do is to be honest with Him.

Seasons of spiritual dryness come for many reasons. Sometimes it’s busyness, exhaustion or unconfessed sin that dulls our sense of God’s nearness. Other times, it simply happens—unexplained, uninvited and unexpected. Even mature followers of Jesus experience it.

But what if, instead of panicking or withdrawing, we saw these moments as an invitation? An invitation to deeper trust, honest prayer and new spiritual growth.

When God feels distant, don’t stop talking to Him. You might be tempted to retreat, to stop praying or worshiping, because it doesn’t “feel” effective. But this is when faith truly matters—not just faith in what you feel, but faith in who God is.

The Bible says He never leaves us or forsakes us, even when we can’t sense His presence. Keep showing up. Keep seeking. Sometimes the most profound worship is declaring, “God, I don’t feel you right now, but I believe you are here. I trust your heart even when I don’t see your hand.”

What should you do in these seasons? First, stay honest. Pray David’s prayer if you need to: “How long, Lord?” God can handle your questions. He would rather have your messy, honest prayers than your silence.

Second, revisit God’s promises. Let Scripture anchor you—read verses about His steadfast love, faithfulness and presence. Write them down and keep them close.

Third, worship anyway. There’s something powerful about choosing to sing, praise and thank God when your heart is heavy. It’s a sacrifice of praise—a gift to God that’s especially precious because it costs you something. In those moments, your worship isn’t based on emotion, but on truth.

Fourth, invite community. Don’t go through spiritual dryness alone. Share your struggles with trusted friends in your Life Group or mentors. Let others pray for you, encourage you and remind you that this season won’t last forever.

Finally, remember that God is always at work, even when He seems silent. The “dark night of the soul” often precedes a fresh revelation of God’s love.

God may be stripping away distractions, deepening your roots or teaching you to seek Him for who He is, not just what He gives. Trust that, as David concludes in Psalm 13, you will sing again. God’s goodness is not measured by your feelings, but by His character.

If you’re in a season when God feels distant, don’t give up. Keep seeking, keep asking, keep knocking. He promises that those who seek Him will find Him.

PRAY

God, help me to trust you, even when I can’t feel you. Remind me of your promises and anchor me in your unfailing love.

Teach me to worship in every season. Bring friends around me who will support and encourage me.

Thank you, that seasons when you feel distant are not the end of my story. I trust that you are working in me, and I will sing of your goodness again.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
